Unlike a solid silicone cord, the material contains a uniformly distributed cellular structure. This allows the profile to be compressed with less force and adapted to gaps, joints or irregular contact surfaces. Silicone foam cord is supplied by the metre and can be cut to the required installation length.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Typical functions include sealing, cushioning, decoupling and compensating for tolerances. The round geometry is particularly suitable for grooves, pipe penetrations, housing joints and structural gaps. Appropriately formulated and tested material grades are available for food-contact applications. Whether a specific version meets food regulations must be verified using its conformity documentation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Properties and material composition<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Silicone rubber offers good resistance to high and low temperatures. The precise operating range depends on the formulation, density, dimensions, duration of exposure and surrounding medium. Temperature specifications must therefore always be considered in relation to the specific grade. Short-term temperature peaks must not be equated with a permissible continuous operating temperature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The foamed structure reduces the density compared with solid silicone and improves compressibility. Closed-cell or predominantly closed-cell grades absorb only limited amounts of water. Cut surfaces may, however, expose open cells. For a liquid-tight design, the profile, cut surfaces, joint design and compression must therefore be assessed together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>elastic recovery when suitably compressed<\/li><li>lower closing forces than a solid cord of comparable dimensions<\/li><li>resistance to ozone, UV radiation and weathering<\/li><li>inherent electrical insulating properties of silicone rubber<\/li><li>low-odour, physiologically suitable grades for sensitive applications<\/li><li>supplied by the metre for cutting, installation and replacement requirements<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Silicone foam is not automatically resistant to every oil, solvent, cleaning agent or process medium. Steam, pressure fluctuations and repeated hot cleaning can also affect ageing behaviour. For critical media, application-specific resistance testing under realistic operating conditions is recommended.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Material grades of silicone foam cord<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The appropriate grade is not determined by diameter alone. Significant differences exist in cellular structure, density, perceived hardness, compression behaviour, colour and conformity status. Softer grades adapt more easily but require a suitable groove geometry. Firmer versions can develop higher recovery forces and are suitable for larger gaps or installation situations subject to greater mechanical stress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>standard grades for technical sealing and cushioning applications<\/li><li>food-grade qualities with a documented formulation and conformity assessment<\/li><li>coloured versions for identifying plant areas or assemblies<\/li><li>different densities for defined compression and recovery force<\/li><li>custom dimensions for technically and economically suitable order quantities<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Colour is not evidence of a specific material grade. A white, red or translucent cord may be used for its intended food-contact application only if the specific compound and the finished product have been assessed accordingly. The product data sheet, test report and declaration of conformity for the supplied grade are decisive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Applications in industry and plant engineering<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In food processing technology, silicone foam cord is used to seal doors, flaps, covers and housings. Examples include baking systems, dryers, packaging machines, dosing systems and container linings. The seal can accommodate manufacturing tolerances and cushion contact between components. In hygiene-sensitive areas, the installation location, cleanability and possible product contact must be taken into account at the design stage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In furnace, heating and drying system construction, the cord serves as a compressible sealing element on viewing windows, maintenance flaps and housing transitions. Silicone foam is not universally suitable for continuous exposure to very high temperatures or direct flame contact. The temperature profile, oxygen exposure, radiant heat and required fire-protection classification must be assessed separately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In mechanical engineering, the profile can seal cable and pipe penetrations, decouple components from one another or serve as a stop buffer. In electrical enclosures and control cabinets, it compensates for gaps between the cover and frame. Other fields of application include air-conditioning and ventilation technology, equipment manufacturing, and laboratory and analytical equipment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>seals for doors, covers and inspection openings<\/li><li>inserts in round or approximately round grooves<\/li><li>cushioning of sensitive component edges<\/li><li>vibration and noise isolation between housing components<\/li><li>sealing of penetrations and structural joints<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Selection criteria for diameter and grade<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The nominal diameter must match the groove or gap to be sealed. Insufficient compression can impair the sealing effect. Excessive compression increases installation and closing forces and can permanently stress the cellular structure. The required compression therefore cannot be specified universally. It depends on density, recovery behaviour, groove geometry, gap tolerance and operating duration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>smallest and largest gap across the full tolerance range<\/li><li>required sealing performance against dust, air, splash water or process media<\/li><li>continuous and peak temperature at the actual installation location<\/li><li>contact with cleaning agents, greases, oils or other media<\/li><li>static or repeatedly moving loads<\/li><li>requirements for food contact, colour and documentation<\/li><li>required delivery length, joints and cutting method<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>For moving flaps and doors, closing frequency, friction and possible shear loads are also relevant. Cords should preferably be installed under compression and not under permanent tension. For series applications, testing samples in the original component is advisable because test values alone cannot fully represent the specific sealing design.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Conformity for food-contact applications<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>For food contact, selected silicone grades can be assessed in accordance with the recommendations of the German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment, particularly BfR Recommendation XV for Silicones. For the US market, an assessment according to FDA 21 CFR 177.2600 is relevant for suitable formulations. This regulation covers rubber articles intended for repeated use in contact with food.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The regulations mentioned do not automatically apply to every silicone foam cord. The specific formulation, manufacturing process, any required post-treatment and the intended contact conditions are decisive. The documentation for the ordered grade must be checked before approval. The user remains responsible for assessing the suitability of the finished component and its operating conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Related silicone products<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If a cavity, media passage or defined wall thickness is required, <a href=\"https:\/\/lindemannsilikon.de\/silikonschlaeuche\/\">silicone hoses<\/a> are often the more suitable design. Colour and designation alone are not sufficient evidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How is the correct diameter determined?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The starting points are the groove dimensions, the minimum and maximum gap, and the required compression. Material density, closing force and manufacturing tolerances must also be taken into account.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Can the cord be cut to length on site?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Yes. Material supplied by the metre can be cut square to length using a sharp, suitable tool. Clean cut surfaces facilitate installation and the formation of joints.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Is silicone foam permanently watertight?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This depends on the cellular structure, cut surfaces, compression and installation design.
